Big stories for October 2019
-------------------------------------------------------
IF YOU READ ONE STORY THIS WEEK, READ ABOUT THE WHITEST CITY IN AMERICA
(NOTE: You’re soaking in it.) Portland, by any count, is one of the least diverse cities in the United States. This is referenced anecdotally, often in hushed tones. But it’s the truth. From our state’s and city’s racist beginnings to our modern day existence, Portland is uncomfortably and homogeneously white.

UNRATED DIRECTOR'S CUT: UNEDITED RESPONSES TO MY WILLAMETTE WEEK INTERVIEW
You may have seen the print edition or the online version of my interview with Willamette Week, this week. I was humbled by the opportunity to take part in this article. And it was a great way to commemorate the milestone of PIE turning a decade old and Silicon Florist turning a dozen years old. I mean, it’s not every day that your projects reach ages where you can talk about the years in euphemisms, simultaneously. Or something. And stuff.

A UNICORN AMONG US: VACASA
The big news around the Portland startup community today — and likely for some time to follow — surrounded the latest round of funding for Vacasa. Why? Because the size of the round — at $319 million — was unusual. And the valuation for that round catapulted the company into unicorn territory.

PORTLAND OFFICE FIGURES PROMINENTLY INTO NEW NEW RELIC PUSH
Portland might not be the corporate headquarters of New Relic. But it is the engineering headquarters. And, as such, is one of the largest tech employers in the region. So it’s always nice to see them stepping up efforts to support the local community and give back. Like they’ve done with a new effort called NewRelic.org.

IT'S NOT REALLY PORTLAND STARTUP WEEK WITHOUT YOUR EVENT
If you know Portland, you know that the “P” in PDX stands for “procrastinate.” So I realize that planning ahead isn’t exactly in our DNA. But that’s what Portland Startup Week is going to ask you to do. Yes, it’s not until April 2020. But you should start thinking about what events you want to put together, right now.
