Big stories for September 2019

PORTLAND STARTUP WEEK HAS A NEW LEAD ORGANIZER
A few years back, I started Portland Startup Week. And as the starter, I became its de facto lead organizer. Despite the fact that I wasn’t terribly good at it. And I kept doing it because I wanted Portland Startup Week to be a thing. Over time, a number folks have pitched in to help pull it together making it an incredible celebration of the Portland startup community with nearly 100 events, from free coworking to panels to hackathons.

BRAVE CARE BALANCES TRADITION AND INNOVATION
It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Darius Monsef. And a lot of that is because I’ve been lucky to watch his efforts and growth over a dozen years or so. And with him now on the third Portland startup that he’s cofounded, I continue to be impressed with the maturity and perspective his significant startup experience — both within Portland and beyond — has wrought.

BUILT FESTIVAL SPAWNS A MUCH LARGER GATHERING AT THE REDD
You know how we love our weeks here in Portland. Sneaker Week. Design Week. Burger Week. Startup Week. Week week weekity week. Sometimes, these weeks try to pretend they’re not actually weeks by not putting “week” in their name. But don’t be fooled. They’re weeks. And if you’re into consumer products — like food, beverage, apparel, and beauty — well then have I got the week for you. Built Festival is back and bigger than ever.

PORTLAND IS HOME TO THE INAUGURAL PORTLAND BLACK WOMEN IN STEM 2.0 SUMMIT
If you’re looking to hear more about the impact and potential of black women in science, technology, engineering, manufacturing, and math, then you’re going to want to be in Portland in October. When the Rose City is home to the inaugural Black Women in STEM 2.0 Summit.

THREE TAKES ON BEHAVIORAL AND MENTAL HEALTH IN STARTUPS
It’s still difficult to talk about. Even with the growing conversation around the stresses of being a startup founder. There’s still a stigma. About talking about founder struggles. Or revealing things that have been historically categorized as a weakness. But I sincerely hope that being more open about founder behavioral and mental health is better for all of us. And that’s why I wanted to share these three pieces that wound up crossing my desk at roughly the same time.

PORTLAND NEEDS MORE STARTUPS. SO DOES THE US.
While it may seem like the Portland startup community is growing in population, I’m not sure that it’s growing in the number of startup companies we’re seeing. And even if that anecdotal assumption is somewhat misplaced locally, broader demographics across the US tend to indicate that it’s probably more true than false. Entrepreneurship has never recovered from the days of the mortgage crisis.

IT'S LIKE A GOOSE SIMULATOR
Maybe you’ve heard of Goat Simulator. Maybe you’ve even played it. Well, if it’s lost its luster for you, I think you need to get ready to be happy. Because I’ve got a new simulator for you. Only now, you’re a goose. And a horrible one, at that.
