REAL ESTATE, FINTECH, AND STEM STARTUPS TO REPRESENT PORTLAND AT 1776 CHALLENGE CUP

Three Portland startups will represent the city’s startup community at the regional 1776 Challenge Cup competition in San Francisco in January.

Noappfee.com, Chroma and Yellow Scope won the local pitch competition. The event, hosted by the Portland Incubator Experiment and sponsored by the Portland Development Commission, took place last night at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. (Full disclosure, I was one of the three judges for the contest.)

PUPPET LABS CEO LUKE KANIES: COMFORTABLE AS ICONOCLAST

The chief executive of Puppet Labs is a Reedie in wool sweaters, with spiral rings running through piercings in each ear, who pedals home at night to a wife and twin daughters in their Alameda-neighborhood home. It's all quintessentially Portland, except that he's doing something profoundly unusual: Building the kind of large, homegrown technology company Oregon hasn't seen in decades.
